As much as we focus on trying to teach students to read by 3rd grade, how do we counteract students as readers by killing the love of reading in students? I continue to read articles such as this one and others that I have posted this fall. I continue to share these articles to help change the focus of reading most prevalent in our schools. Let's try to help students maintain or regain a love of reading through supporting their autonomy in choosing books they want to read. Let students realize when book isn't what they thought it was going to be and allow them to choose again. The part where reading for enjoyment improves student achievement will occur after the culture and climate of the love of reading is developed.
